The Bird X peller Pro is a continual usage device. That means in order to keep birds away, it has to always be on.
If you want to test and see if you can get control by turning it on and off, then that is up to you.

The Bird X Peller Pro is for small areas. An orchard would require a much larger full scale solution such as the Super Hoot Hazer using Rejex. This is what most growers use. The Rejex contains grape seed extract that irritates most birds and causes them to stay away from the area.
There are several growers that use 2 or more these on a daily basis. They basically move them around constantly depending on the direction of the wind.
