Bora care is a wood preservative, and a great termite preventive treatment. It is really not the best product to use if you have an active infestation of termites.

We have powder post beetles in our hardwood floors. We aren't sure how they got there and how extensive the problem is. We have extra wood and could replace the invested boards, but are concerned that we are running the risk of having these wood eating creatures infest our furniture. So, we are considering replacing our entire floor. Here are my questions.

1. Can we just replace the infested wood and be okay or is this a bandaid that could lead to bigger problems?

2. If we remove our entire floor, should we treat the subfloor? We have a cement floor, with plywood on top of that and sound foam on top of the plywood.

3. If we treat our subfloor with Boracare, how long will the treatment last? Will it kill beetle eggs? If the eggs hatch in the future, what is the likelihood of the beetle destroying our new floors?

4. Some people feel it is overkill to treat the subfloor. What is your opinion?

5. Is boracare easy to apply?

What you are dealing with is probably one of the most aggravating of all wood destroying insect infestations to deal with, next to the other powder beetle, the anobiid. You are probably dealing with Lyctid Powder Post Beetle. I have seen this beetle emerge out of a wooden hutch that was over 35 years old. No previous evidence of infestation, and all of the sudden, when the temperature and everything was right, they emerge and exit the wood leaving small exit holes…

I milled an oak tree and dried the lumber for 2 years. The lumber is infected by a large number of powderpost beetles. I treated it with a 1:1 solution of Bora-care. The next day I saw a few new piles of sawdust on the treated lumber. Did the treatment work? Can I use the wood to make furniture? See more »

Bora Care contains a form of boron (mineral) that kills powder post beetle larvae only. The larvae are the actual worms that do the damage. It does not kill adult beetles or those beetles that are in the pupae stage. A powder post beetle goes through a life cycle like this - egg, larvae, pupae, adult.

When you see adult powder post beetles emerge from the wood, it may be an indication in some cases that the Bora Care is stressing them and they are exiting the wood. It will not kill adult beetles however.

I intend to isolate the dogs from the treatment area of course but would it be ok to apply the product and still reside within the home. See more »

Bora Care is a wood treatment product. It contains a form of the mineral boron known as Disodium Octoborate Tetrahydrate (DOT). DOT has the toxicity of table salt. Bora Care also contains glycol which acts as a penetrate for the DOT.

The chemical makeup of Bora Care is considered to be a low toxicity. The way that is is applied - directly to wood, makes it unlikely, that is will be a hazard to people or pets.

For these reasons, Bora Care is also considered to be a "green" treatment and relatively safe… See full answer »

I am planning on spraying Bora Care to the open wood framing and foaming the walls that are inclosed by sheetrock. Is filling the spacing between the frame ok or do I need to drill into the infested area in the frame or 2x4. See more »

Normally for drywood termites, you need to find the "kickout" holes and then drill into and through these tiny holes and into the termite chambers where they are living. When you drill into the kickout holes use a cordless hand drill with a 1/8 bit and drill into the holes and also every 8-12 inches along the entire length of the stud. By doing this you are trying to penetrate into the termite galleries. Use a stud finder if you have to. The Termidor Foam is then applied into the holes that penetrate the galleries.

If you can't find the galleries, then you will have to drill in between the studs and foam the entire wall cavity. This is hard to do with a can of foam. The Solo Foamer with Termidor SC is much more economical when doing wall cavity foaming… See full answer »

Treatment for powder post beetles depends on many factors. The most important factor is whether the wood is painted, stained or sealed. If so, Bora Care is not an option unless the sealant is removed. Bora Care only penetrates bare wood.

Other factors include type of wood (oak, mahogany, etc.), age of wood and where the wood was located when it was stored.

Since Powder Post beetles normally do not infest already finished cabinets, (they infest bare wood sitting in storage), treatment after they are built is often… See full answer »

The whole interior of our home is a untreated knotty pine with what we thought was worm hole. Very beautiful rustic. WRONG!. All the sudden we have an active infestation of powder post beetles. and they are dropping from the ceiling in every room. We find about 10 to 15 adult beetles a day. Can we spray your product directly on our untreated walls? Help!!! See more »

RonDawson  •
Yes, you can spray the Bora Care directly on the untreated wood. If the wood has any finish, coating, stain, paint, etc, then the Bora Care will not penetrate. Bora Care will penetrate about 2 inches into the wood. The wood needs to be sprayed from all sides if possible.

My #1 recommendation on Powder Post Beetle infestations is to have the structure fumigated. Bora Care does a good job of preventing pests. It will not do such a good job of controlling existing infestations.

Bora Care is a wood treatment. It is only designed to be sprayed onto bare wood to kill and deter fungus, termites, ants, etc. As far as being compatible with copper lines, I do not know of any issues that it would have.

Are borates corrosive? yes. Will it eat through a copper water line? I have never heard of anyone complain or have had any issues in over 20 years of using and selling it.

Hope this helps… See full answer »

Have beetles in basement but none noticed in house. Must I fog whole house or just basement /crawl space? Which insecticide do you recommend. See more »

RonDawson  •
Bora Care is a direct wood application. It has be sprayed, rolled or brushed onto infested bare wood. It cannot be applied to wood with paint, stain or sealants of any kind as this would stop the saturation of Bora Care into the wood. It is also not suitable for fogging.

Apply Bora Care to the point of run-off and then let dry thoroughly. Again apply only to bare wood.

For most applications, Bora Care is the best and only treatment available to homeowners for Powder Post Beetles… See full answer »

“I used Bora-care on my wood fence over 20 years ago and not one termite has even touched it. The leftover wood that was not treated was put aside by my shed. It has long ago been eaten up by termites and discarded.”

“Very easy to use, very effective and excellent instructions for all applications. You can't beat this stuff. We're restoring an 18040's post and beam building and we treat all the new lumber going in it with this stuff. The building had been destroyed by carpenter ants, this stuff is excellent.”
